The English spelling system is full of complexity and apparent anomalies. For example, why is the "ig" in sign is pronounced / ay / and the "ig" in signature pronounced / ig /? In what follows, I will provide some guidance for pronouncing this problematic sequence of letters. There are a few exceptions, but without them, English would lose part of its undeniable charm. Don't you think?
Ig at the beginning of a word: the g is pronounced
ignition, ignite, igneous, ignore, ignominious, ignoramus.
Vowel + ign: silent g
In this list are campaign, reign, sovereign and feign. No matter what comes after the "ign"; the g is never pronounced. Aig = ai, eig = ei.
Consonant + ign + ∅: ign = /ayn/
After consonant + ign, ign is pronounced / ayn /. Sign, design, resign, align, malign, benign, design, realign.
Consonant + ign + consonant: ign = / ayn /
Signs, assignment, alignment, benignly.
Different vowels after -ign lead to different pronunciations.
Consonant + ign + e, i or o: silent g.
Signed, signee, co-signer, signing, consignee, designer, resignedly.
Consonant + ign + i: g = /g /
Before suffixes such as-ify,-ity, and -ificant, however, the g is pronounced. Dignity, dignify, significant, insignificantly.
Consonant + ign + a: g = / g /
Here the g makes its presence felt: designation, signature, assignation, signal, signalize, malignant.
There are a few words derived from French where gn is pronounced / ny /; peignor, seigneur, vignette.
