Em frente nem sempre é in front of

Apesar das semelhanças aparentes, in front of e em frente se referem a posições bem diferentes.  

Across from = em frente de

She is across from him.  She is across the table from him.

Ela está olhando para ele.  Ele está olhando para ela.  Tem uma mesa entre eles.  Ela está em frente dela. Ela está em frente dele.  She is looking at him.  He is looking at her.  There is a table between them.  She is across from him.  He is across from her.  

Para sermos bem claros, podemos colocar o que fica entre as pessoas no meio da frase.  Podemos dizer She is across the table from him.  He is across the table from her.   Ela está em frente dele, do outro lado da mesa.  Ele está do outro lado da mesa, em frente dela. 

Aqui temos a library uma biblioteca e um hospital a hospital.    The library is across from the hospital.  A biblioteca fica em frente do hospital.  The hospital is across from the library.  Para maior precisão, The library is across the street from the hospital.  The hospital is across the street from the library.  A biblioteca fica do outro lado da rua do hospital.  O hospital fica do outro lado da rua da biblioteca.   A biblioteca está "olhando" para o hospital e o hospital está "olhando" para a biblioteca e tem uma rua entre eles.  

In front of   na frente de.   She is in front of him.  

Aqui temos uma waiting line uma fila de espera.  These people are waiting in line.  Estas pessoas esão esperando na fila.   Tem uma ordem aqui, com uma pessoa atrás de outra.   

In this line, the short woman is in front of the short-haired man.  A mulher baixa está na frente do homem com cabelo curto.   The blonde is in front of the tall man.  A loira está na frente do homem alto.  

Nesta foto, vemos um Mercedes primeiro e atrás dele, a casa.  The Mercedes is in front of the house.  O Mercedes está na frente da casa.  

In front of : numa posição onde você pode ver alguma coisa.  He's eating in front of the computer.

Este homem está fazendo duas coisas ao mesmo tempo.  Está olhando o comutador e comendo.  He is eating in front of the computer.  Ele está comendo em frente ao computador.  

In front of:   na presença de uma platéia

This man is speaking in front of an audience.     Este homem está falando na frente de uma plateia.    Podemos usar in front of para palestras, aulas e espetáculos de todos os tipos.  The orchestra performed in front of  three thousand people.  A orquestra tocou na frente de três mil pessoas.
